Making a bracelet

Bracelets are so easy to make. Especially the current tribal style wooden bead bracelets.

I used to make bracelets as a kid. Mom had a huge box of colorful wooden beads. I would take an elastic, the thick elastic string or band you use for dress making and string the beads through it. I would measure enough beads to go around my wrist. Then I would tie a dead knot to secure the bracelet. Done. As easy as that.

In my late teens, I really loved making jewelry and selling them. Or rather, I loved making jewelry. Mom would supply me with everything I needed. Then when the jewelry was completed, I would pass them to her to pass to our church to sell in fairs to raise funds for the church building. I didn't like wearing them. Just making the jewelry.

For a more natural stone and wood effect, I would get the white clay. Plaster of Paris, white modelling clay, whatever you call it. You know, the stuff you can mould into the shapes you like and then leave to harden and dry. Those were wonderful as fake stones. I would shape them into round or oval 'pebbles' and poke a wooden skewer through each of them to form a hole, making a bead. Then I take out the skewer and let the beads dry.

Once dry, I'd paint them, and once the paint was dry, I would use a needle with a large eye, a strong elastic string and use these fake stones with wooden beads to make necklaces. I'd paint a layer of varnish over the stones for a prettier look.
